Healthy intestines - the cornerstone of our immunity

Man – the ruler of the world? How we would like to believe this statement. We undoubtedly have a great influence on the Earth, both positive and negative. But the real reality is that we humans live in a world ruled by microbes.

Author: Ludmila Francová Even a person and his body are actually just a container for microbes. Among the most important ones that significantly affect the quality of our life and health are the microbes in the large intestine. And there are not a few of them, an adult healthy person can have up to 2 kg of microbes in their large intestine. The intestinal microflora has a fundamental influence on digestion and our metabolism. But what is most important, it also has an impact on our health. Up to 80% of our immune system is formed in our intestines. It should be in our interest to keep our intestines healthy and clean. Our food can help us with this. Fermented foods are a good helper. When food is fermented, a lot of beneficial substances enter, such as vitamin B, Omega-3 fatty acids, various types of enzymes, but also probiotics. So our body not only digests better, it gets rid of excess kilograms better, but probiotics can also slow down or stop some diseases. So include in your diet, for example, pickled and fermented white and red cabbage, pickled cucumbers, hot peppers or fermented dairy products such as kefir and tempeh. On the contrary, the killers of living bacteria in the intestines are sweeteners, gluten, genetically modified foods, but also antibiotics, alcohol, stress and lack of sleep. All this leads not only to a weakening of our immune system, but also to the development of various food allergies and intolerances, diarrhea, constipation, intestinal inflammation, increased fatigue and the onset of depression. Up to 90% of serotonin, which is responsible for our feelings of happiness, is produced by the cells of our intestines. Our intestines are also considered the center of mental health, the large intestine is rightly called our second brain. This brain does not think, but it communicates with the brain in our head. We can also keep our intestinal flora in good condition with food supplements. When choosing probiotics, always choose carefully and pay particular attention to the number of live cultures and types of bacterial strains. In order for the therapeutic effect of probiotics to be evident, the daily dose for an adult should be 10 to 20 billion live bacteria, for children 5 - 10 billion. Do not forget also the important role of prebiotics, which are actually food for our live bacteria, i.e. probiotics. The best source is plant fiber, of which we should eat at least 20g daily.
