What is BMI?
Obesity occurs when energy intake exceeds energy expenditure over a long period of time. There are several methods to determine whether a person is overweight. Body Mass Index (BMI) is one of them. If your BMI is higher than 25, you are overweight. You can see the distribution for BMI in the graph below. However, BMI is not a completely objective measure of the degree of overweight, because it does not say anything about how much of your weight is fat and how much is muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat. Consequently, if you are well trained and very muscular, you will have a high BMI - without being overweight. For this reason, waist circumference is often a better indicator.
A BMI over 25 and a waist circumference over 88 cm in women and 102 cm in men increase the risk of developing lifestyle diseases. Losing weight is the most effective method to reduce the health risks associated with being overweight. In the graph below, you can see the relationship between waist circumference and the risk of lifestyle diseases. If you want to lose weight and reduce the risk of developing lifestyle diseases, your energy intake must be less than your energy expenditure in order to be in an energy deficit. If you eat and drink too much, the excess energy will be converted into fat, which is stored in the body's fat reserves for later use. However, in our time and in our region, this is not necessary, because we do not need fat reserves and it is increasingly difficult to get rid of them.
